This community was named for "Judge" I. D. Haines of Baker City,
who owned land on which the town was platted.

The town was started in 1883, the year before the railroad
was laid through the Baker Valley.

The post office was established in November of 1884,
with Florence A. Dorsett as the first postmistress.
